What is Sharpen?

Sharpen Conference is an annual, accessible, affordable equipping conference with a focus on learning through community, building upon our individual and shared experiences in order to effectively serve within and outside of the church. Thanks to a steady flow of gifted guest speakers, industry professionals and insightful presenters who truly understand modern church ministry, Sharpen has helped hundreds of participants from dozens of Alberta churches have greater impact.
Since it began in 2012 as a conference for church technicians, Sharpen has grown to include musical development tracks and sessions for discipleship and spiritual growth. For the first time, this year’s event sees the technical, musical and discipleship facets of Sharpen offered in a single event in one location.

It’s for Techs

Technical sessions feature practical training on video production, sound, lighting, multimedia and stage management. Custom-targeted audio classes are available for sound “newbies” through to experienced veterans. Participants can also get a feel for the latest technological advancements in the Sharpen Trade Show and receive customized advice relevant to their ministry context. However large or small a role technology plays in your church, Sharpen offers something for you.

It’s for Musicians and Vocalists
Complacency and satisfaction with the status quo continually threaten our desire and ability to fully express Jesus’ worth through music. Guest artists and clinicians offer skill-specific and instrument-specific training in all areas of music ministry. In response to previous years’ feedback, Sharpen is expanding with sessions such as worship band leadership and an opportunity for vocalists to join a mass choir that will support our special guest worship leaders. Your volunteers will emerge refueled with fresh ideas, improved skills and an affirmation of their calling.

More than Skills
We know that effectiveness in serving the church is about more than having a “specific set of skills”. That’s why Sharpen offers sessions that speak to our primary task of being followers of Jesus. Classes on such topics as intercession, hearing God’s voice & responding to Him, worship theology and the worshipper’s heart help participants remove hindrances that no amount of technical know-how or musical ability can overcome.
